Abstract:
In September 2002, FranchiseHelp completed its 2nd annual survey of top market share franchised companies operating in the Dinnerhouse Industry. Dinnerhouse chains are casual dining restaurants that serve alcohol and specialize in full service dining for dinner and sometimes lunch. They are often less expensive than higher end restaurants, offering per-person meals in the $15-$25 range.
Did you know that:
Casual dining restaurants account for 16% of the total restaurant industry (American Demograpics, Oct. 1998).
The average American has increased spending on food away from home by 35% since 1987 (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Applebee's ranked #1 in market share against competitors such as Red Lobster and T.G.I. Friday's (Nation's Restaurant News, June 2002).
About 55% of casual dining patrons eat at an outlet three or more times a month.
Despite the impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York, most analysts believe that the casual dining segment will continue to be strong. This is because: (1) people like to eat out regardless of the economy, (2) casual dining restaurants do not face the same price competition that fast-food chains face, (3) dinnerhouses target middle-income consumers where price is not much of a factor.
